Spirit, Creativity, and the Arts

As we have begun to see, the absorption in materials achieved in art is the first moment of absorption into the world; to make a work of art is in this way to allow nature or the world to act through one’s body
— Crispin Sartwell

One of the most joyful ways to connect to Earth and Spirit, is to contemplate Nature’s beauty and listen to the Spirit’s call. With a paintbrush, pens or pencils, with crayons, markers or collage paper, we can play with the colors and forms we are surrounded by. Listening to the wind. Just resting our minds. We may hear music, or find ourselves spilling words onto the page. Whether you are a beginner or experienced artist, these connections with the outer and inner worlds stretch our minds, to the Great Spirit.

When we move toward our own creativity, we move toward our Creator. When we seek to become more spiritual, we find ourselves becoming more creative. Our creativity and our spirituality are so closely interconnected they are in effect one and the same thing. Speaking of God, we often use the words “Maker” or “Creator” without recognizing that those terms are for the “artist”. God is the Great Artist. We are the creations and we are intended, in turn, to be creative ourselves
